About Me

Hello,

Welcome to Adventures in Social Studies!  My name is Ruth Mangum, and I am currently in my eighth year of teaching 6th Social Studies in Greenville, South Carolina.

I like to refer to my class as the “Dead People Class” because, as I explained to my students on the first day, “everyone we will talk about is dead.” And somehow, it stuck and now that’s how we refer to class!  But it’s small things like that, making light of the content that keeps students engaged and gives them a small peak at the adventures this year will take them on.

I am originally from Southern California, where I was born and raised.  My parents are immigrants from Eastern Europe and I am so thankful for the sacrifices they took to give me and my siblings a shot at the American Dream.

My family moved to the East Coast in 2005 and a new chapter in my adventure started.  Since graduating from college and grad school, I’ve gotten married, have two adorable children and settled into teaching 11 year old students about how the past has shaped the world we live in.

I’m so glad that you are here, and welcome to the adventure!
